I love this little space...It's on the side of our house-a little courtyard of sorts. You follow a little brick pathway, and there's the garden. It makes me happy. But our green thumb has turned brown....I think.
Our veggies didn't grow so well last year and Craig tried to revive the soil with a lime/manure mixture-which is exactly what you should do....a season before! So, we think we've burned our little garden because we did it right before we planted (did I mention we have a hard time following directions?). We send her a lot of love and encourage her to grow (the sign is a reminder; the prayer flags are hoping for intervention), but she looks a little stunted. I'm thinking by the time we do a winter garden, the soil will be just right....
My basil is doing well (it its own pot). I can't wait to have summer pesto. I could eat it every meal (pasta and I get along quite well during pregnancy). I also grew potatoes from seed potatoes for the first time in pots. Those have gone wild. Potatoes are so darn easy. You really can't mess them up.
However, chickens can. Chickens will do whatever is necessary to get back to the garden. We built a blockade of hay. They got over it. And our yard....we have no grass! No need for a lawnmower. At this point, we have a dirt yard. It took them a year to do it. And although I want them to roam free, we had to make some adjustments. So, we built a chicken run (very big) to confine them. We'll let them out too, but pecking all day has created a mud pit.
Medusa is not happy about it. She's Craig's favorite.
